When I
was in my 20's I used to look at guys in their
late 30's and early 40's and wonder how they could let themselves get
like
that...you know, flabby, out-of-shape, suffering from "Dunlop
Syndrome" (that's the condition where your belly "done lopped"
over your waistline).
Then I
hit my mid-30's, and before I knew it, I was
right there with them.
I
didn't consciously "let" myself get that
way, it just kind of snuck up on me.
I've
got a small frame, so even a little bit of
weight stands out on me...and it seemed like all of it was right where
it was
the most visible.
Yes, I was suffering
from the dreaded "Dunlop
Syndrome".
I
looked like a soda straw on legs with a ping-pong
ball stuck halfway down.
I knew
I had to do something, and luckily my kid
sister had the answer…she knew I was a big milk drinker, and that I
drank whole
milk…at least a gallon a day, sometimes more.
She
told me I had to make the change to non-fat milk.
Now, if you're a milk drinker, you know that it just doesn't taste the
same.
Non-fat (skim milk for my fellow baby-boomers) tastes like water
compared to
the regular stuff.
So,
she told me to mix half regular with half low-fat
and drink that for a while. Then switch to straight low-fat, then half
low-fat
and half non-fat…and within a couple of months I was drinking straight
non-fat
milk and loving it!
Now if
I drink regular milk, or even the 2% stuff, it
seems like I'm drinking buttermilk. If you had told me when I was in my
20's
that I would one day be drinking non-fat milk on a regular basis, I'd
have told
you that you were nuts.
But I
was motivated mostly by the way I looked, and
that I had promised myself never to get like that…and I had to make the
change.
In
retrospect, it was easy. I didn't make any sudden
major changes, I sort of pulled the same trick on my body that it had
pulled on
me - I snuck up on it.
And
the best part? I lost that annoying, unattractive
"belly fat" that made me look like I never wanted to look, without
feeling a bit deprived.
So,
what's the moral to my story? Well, the whole
point is that diet programs don't have to entail a lot of suffering.
You can
make small, but significant changes in your diet, a little bit at a
time, and
get to where you want to be.
